- DISCOVER AN ARCHITECT
2 ConEd Learning Hours
The concept of “sustainable development” has had strong repercussions on the building sector, but do we cover the full spectrum? There have been considerable improvements with respect to environmental issues, but can we say the same regarding social considerations? Do we address issues of equity, inclusiveness, diversity and social justice in our architectural curriculum or practices? Is good architecture accessible to those who need it most?
Already, most of the world’s population does not benefit from quality design or adequate infrastructure. When we factor in the new problems linked to climate change, urbanization and human migration, the social inequalities are further accentuated. What can the architectural community do about this? Be it at on a global or local scale, how can the professionals and other stakeholders in the industry act with responsibility and solidarity? What roles should academia, professional associations and humanitarian NGOs play?
Architecture Sans Frontières Québec, the humanitarian arm of the Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ), invites you to take part in the dialogue by attending this event. A guest speaker from White Arkitekter, Sweden’s largest architectural firm, will lead the way by sharing insight into socially and culturally appropriate architecture. Subsequently, a panel of Canadian experts will reflect on ways to increase architecture’s social impact.
