Markham Launches 2014 Design Excellence Awards

MARKHAM, ON ~ September 16, 2014 ~ Markham is seeking nominations for its 2014 Design Excellence Awards. These prestigious awards recognize and promote excellence in urban design.

Submissions for this city-wide program are sought from architects, designers, planners, landscape architects, engineers, developers, consultants, owners and the general public. To be considered, projects must be located within the City of Markham and be built prior to September 30, 2014.

All types of development are eligible including industrial, commercial, residential, recreational, heritage, streetscapes, parks and public space. Submissions may include single buildings, open spaces, structures, additions or exterior renovations. The Design Excellence Awards are presented during each term of Council. The last awards were presented in November 2010.

A six-member jury, consisting of a member of Markham Council, design professionals and Markham Staff, will be reviewing all 2014 award submissions. This year’s Jury Members include: a member of Markham’s Development Services Committee; Donald Schmitt, Principal, Diamond Schmitt Architects; David Leinster, Partner, The Planning Partnership; James Parakh, Urban Design Manager, City of Toronto; Anne McIlroy, Principal, Brook McIlroy Architects; and Jim Baird, Commissioner of Development Services. City Architect Ronji Borooah is the Jury’s Professional Advisor.

The submission deadline is 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2014. Each submission must include a completed Submission Form accompanied by a CD/USB containing images that show the project’s significance, function, aesthetics, context and execution. The Awards will be announced and presented at a special ceremony on November 10, 2014.
