The City of Markham, one of the fastest growing municipalities in the GTA, is known for design excellence. Proposed growth in Markham’s intensification areas, such as Markham Centre (including the new campus of York University), Langstaff, Buttonville and Cornell Centre, will be based on design excellence to achieve an exceptional public realm and attractive, sustainable buildings. Markham plans to establish a Design Review Panel (The Panel) as a two year pilot project to reach this goal.
The Panel will consist of at least seven members, including a chair and vice chair. The composition of the Panel should include at least three architects, one urban designer, one landscape architect and one engineer. A City of Markham staff member will act as Panel Coordinator.
Role of the Panel
The Panel will serve in an advisory role to the City by providing expert, professional design advice for a variety of complex projects. The Panel will act as an independent advisory body, providing recommendations to the Planning & Urban Design Department on matters of design regarding projects in the development approval process.
Panel members should be senior design professionals with at least 10 years of relevant and practical professional experience. Members should be able to work within a multi-disciplinary environment, be able to evaluate and comment on complex projects in varying contexts, and have a good understanding of the municipal planning environment and the development approval process. Members should be in good standing with their respective professions.
The establishment of the Panel has been approved by City Council as a pilot project for a two year term starting August 1, 2015. The Panel is expected to meet for half-day sessions at the Civic Centre, 101 Town Centre Boulevard, Markham, approximately every month. Members will serve for the two year term of the pilot project.
Members will serve on a voluntary basis, but will be reimbursed at cost for travel and other incidental expenses.
