OAA Headquarters Renew & Refresh
OAA Architect David Fujiwara presented the proposed interior layout for the renovated OAA Headquarters to Council, along with furniture options, material selections and colour palates.
Following the presentation and discussion, Council approved the interior design which reflects a more collaborative and open concept as well as having a considerable amount of additional meeting space.
A pre-tender estimate is anticipated for Council approval in the next two months. OAA staff will vacate the building over the Labour Day weekend to make way for the year-long construction. Tender award is anticipated in mid-September with construction to begin shortly thereafter. Council was advised of Pro-Demnity Insurance Company’s decision to leave the building permanently and seek alternate office space. A more detailed update on the building renovation and refresh was e-mailed to members earlier this week.
Ontario Association for Applied Architectural Sciences – Annual Meeting of the Founder
OAA Council voted on the usual order of business that would be dealt with by the OAAAS later in the week at the annual meeting of the Founder. The OAAAS is the official technology program of the OAA recognizing that the OAA is the sole founding organization. Items voted on included appointments to the Board of Directors, appointment of the auditor, as well as appointment of officers. OAA Council also received and approved the 2016 Financial Report and Audit Statement for the OAAAS. Later in the week, OAA President John Stephenson represented the Founder at the annual meeting which was held at the Conference Hotel in Ottawa.
Establishment of Legal Reserve Fund
The Senior Vice President and Treasurer presented a proposal to establish a legal reserve fund. As the regulatory and enforcement body for architecture in Ontario, Council agreed that it is good governance to have a legal reserve given that it is very difficult to predict legal fees in any given year.
Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities (CALA) - Revised Terms of Reference for cooperation
Council approved the revised Terms of Reference for the operation of CALA, which consists of the 11 Architectural Regulators. In addition, it was reported that the CALA Administrators have developed an agreement to bring on administrative support for CALA. The terms of reference for the cooperation between CALA has been amended to incorporate this delegation as well as other housekeeping amendments.
Revised Terms of Reference for the International Relations Committee
As a member of the Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities (CALA), Council approved minor revisions to revised Terms of Reference for CALA’s International Relations Committee (IRC). The Immediate Past President who is a member of the IRC reported that the amendments included some housekeeping updates and clarification with respect to the appointment process for members to the IRC.
Pro-Demnity Insurance Company Annual Meeting of the Shareholder
In advance of the annual meeting of the shareholder, OAA Council considered a number of items that would be voted upon at the June 21 AGM. These included appointment of the Board of Directors, appointment of the actuary, receipt of the Pro-Demnity Business Plan and 2016 Financial Statements.
The OAA is the sole Shareholder of Pro-Demnity Insurance Company.
