The first in a new series of discussions on the role of culture in urban renewal. Beginning in the fall of 2018, the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery (KWAG) is leading a new series of conversations on the role of culturally active spaces in the creation of great cities with the new Culture Talks series. KWAG is hosting a series of discussions that explore how the integration of culture and urban renewal leads to culturally active spaces and the creation of great cities. Culture Talks: Creating Culturally Active Spaces focuses on topics such as cultural destinations, stunning buildings, place-making initiatives, public art, and multi-functional developments. Launching the series is Canadian architect Bruce Kuwabara.

Kuwabara, of KPMB Architects, is an influential advocate of architectural excellence whose unwavering belief in the power of architecture to implement social and civic change has been recognized with the RAIC Gold Medal, the Ontario Association of Architects Lifetime Achievement Award, and his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada. As the architect behind such high-profile art museum projects as the Remai Modern in Saskatoon and the recent renewal of the Ottawa Art Gallery, Kuwabara will offer a compelling vision on the role of cultural destinations and creative place-making in the future of our cities.

“Waterloo Region is undergoing a tremendous amount of transformative growth, and the gallery is committed to embracing our role in the revitalization of downtown Kitchener and the Civic District through culture,” explains Shirley Madill, KWAG’s executive director. “Bruce Kuwabara’s projects and his team’s advocacy for the creation of vibrant, livable cities are critical to this conversation. We are pleased to bring in this visionary architect whose approach to all buildings embraces the idea of human interaction. The sponsorship of Perimeter Development Corporation, a company that has been instrumental in the development of downtown Kitchener, was a perfect match for Culture Talks.”
